Their last great album, although New Gold Dream wasn’t bad, produced by Steve Hillage. This was 3 years before Jim Kerr learnt to go La, La, La and it all went downhill and bombastic. Back in 1981 they were still synth led, great bass lines from Derek Forbes and Charlie Burchill’s guitar added texture and Jim didn’t go La, La, La, La. It contained concert favourites The American & Love Song but I loved In Trance as Mission and Theme from Great Cities (Jim didn’t get to sing on that one!) I remember seeing them on Top of the Pops with Sweat in Bullet and the drums were long white curved cylinders, hints of the pretension to come? There was a brief return to form with the 2009 album Graffiti Soul but then the following album was called Big Music – ’nuff said really
